Red Maple Inn
The Red Maple Inn was the original idea for my very first zine, which ended up morphing into the Timber Wolf Tavern instead. In honour of Free RPG Day 2025, I wanted to bring back the original floorplan for the Red Maple Inn and offer it as a free download.
The floorplan is compact, featuring a small dining section, bar, kitchen, and bedroom for the owners. It can be printed on most standard at-home printers, fitting on a letter-sized piece of paper.
Want a little more to go with the map? Here’s a blurb to help bring the Red Maple Inn into your next game:
Welcome to the Red Maple Inn, a small rest stop for the weary, combined with a tasty tavern for the locals. It is owned and operated by the Miller family, which consists of four people: father Rusty, mother Hazel, son Coal, and daughter Violet.
First impressions are important, and this building emits a lot of character, with a brick chimney at the front, and decorative wood paneling on the upper floors. A wooden sign hangs near the front door, with its signature maple leaf carved into it.
Although the building is small, it is often packed around meal time, with seating for 15 people, and often more coming in to get food to go. All members of the family work hard to keep the business running smoothly, though it’s not uncommon for one of the family members to be off for the day, with another helping to take over their duties.
The main floor is home to three round, wooden tables, and a small bar at the back of the room. Although it is tight for seating, patrons are never missed by the servers. A variety of spirits and ales are displayed along the back wall behind the bar, available for purchase. A narrow staircase in the back left corner leads up to the second floor, where rooms are available to rent on a nightly basis.
Through the door behind the bar is the kitchen. A large, brick fireplace dominates the room, which houses an oven and an open spit for roasting meats or boiling soup in a cauldron. A back door to the building leads out of the kitchen, and is usually locked. Farther past the kitchen is a small bedroom where Rusty and Hazel sleep and keep all the documents and bills for their business.
Although there were plans to draw the second floor and the attic, I never found the time. The original map had several mistakes in the inking, which I finally got around to fixing digitally about two years later.
